PODCAST EPISODE TRANSCRIPT
Claudia von Boeselager
INTRO - WELCOME (0:00 - 1:30)
Hello my sweet friends,
and welcome back to the Longevity & Lifestyle Podcast.
This is a slightly different episode today - a solo episode - and one that feels quite personal… and also, I think, quite universal.
A couple weeks ago, I lost my voice.
Not metaphorically…
but physically. Completely.
And for someone who speaks for a living…
who records podcasts, gives talks, communicates with clients and friends and family all day…
it was, let’s say… not ideal.
But what surprised me most…
was not the inconvenience.
It was what emerged… in the silence.
Pause
And that’s what I want to share with you today.
✈️
SECTION 1 - THE STORY (1:30 - 4:00)
So, picture this.
I was in Madrid,
I had a talk scheduled that afternoon….
and I woke up with almost no voice.
Now, I’ve lost my voice before - it’s something I seem to have inherited from my mother - this kind of sudden laryngitis that can come out of nowhere.
My daughter had been a bit sick that week,
I was traveling,
my system was probably a little run down…
but still, the timing felt… almost poetic.
I remember being stage, speaking into a microphone,
very aware that my voice was barely there…
and feeling this mix of gratitude - that I could still deliver the talk -
and also this underlying sense of…
something’s not quite right.
And then… over the next few days…
my voice completely disappeared.
Three full days…
of not being able to speak.
And in that space…
I was, quite literally…
silenced.
🧬
SECTION 2 - THE BODY IS ALWAYS COMMUNICATING (4:00 - 7:00)
Now, the first layer of this - the most obvious one - is physical.
And I always like to start there.
Because the body is incredibly intelligent.
It doesn’t just randomly stop working….
it communicates.
And often… it whispers first.
And if we don’t listen…
it speaks a little louder.
And eventually…
it forces us to stop.
And for me, one of the realizations was very practical.
I’ve been speaking… from my throat.
Not from my diaphragm - not from my breath -
which is how trained speakers and singers are taught to use their voice sustainably.
And when we speak from the throat…
we’re essentially pushing… instead of supporting.
Add to that:
speaking too quickly
not pausing enough
speaking over noise, over stimulation
being in constant output mode
…and the system gets overloaded.
So at a very simple level…
my body said:
“Enough. We’re done for now.”
🪞 SECTION 3 - THE MIRROR OF SILENCE (7:00 - 11:00)
But then… there was a deeper layer.
Because when you lose your voice…
you don’t just stop speaking.
You start listening.
Pause
And what became very clear to me…
was how much of my life is structured around output.
Speaking. Teaching. Sharing. Creating. Doing.
And suddenly… none of that was available.
And instead…
there was space.
Space to observe.
Space to think.
Space to just… be.
And I noticed something quite confronting:
How little intentional silence I had actually built into my life.
Not accidental silence…
but chosen silence.
And it made me reflect:
Where are we over-speaking…
and under-listening?
Where are we constantly reacting…
instead of reflecting?
Where are we so busy expressing…
that we’re not actually hearing…
what’s trying to come through?
🧠
SECTION 4 - THE POWER OF STEPPING BACK (11:00 - 15:00)
And this brought to mind a story I’ve always loved.
About Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst with many great teachings we still use today.
He built a tower - outside of Zurich -
with no electricity, no running water.
A very simple, almost primitive space.
And he would go there regularly…
to think.
To reflect. To write.
To step away from his patients, from his work, from the noise of daily life.
And what’s fascinating…
is that some of his most profound, enduring ideas…
came not from doing more.
But from stepping back.
From creating space.
And I think this is especially relevant right now.
Because we’re living in a world…
where everything is accelerating.
AI, information, communication, expectations…
everything is faster, louder, more.
And yet…
our greatest advantage as humans…
may not be speed.
It may be depth.
And depth… requires space.
✨
SECTION 5 - SILENCE & CREATION (15:00 - 17:00)
There’s a quote I love from Albert Einstein:
“Imagination is a preview of life’s coming attractions.”
And I would add to that…
that imagination doesn’t happen in noise.
It happens in stillness.
In quiet.
In those moments where we’re not consuming,
not reacting,
not producing…
but simply allowing.
Allowing ideas to emerge.
Allowing clarity to form.
Allowing something new… to come through.
And I realized…
that what I initially experienced as a disruption…
was actually an invitation.
🧘♀️
SECTION 6 - THE SILENCE RESET PROTOCOL (17:00 - 19:00)
So I want to leave you with something practical.
A simple way to start integrating this into your life.
I call it…
the Silence Reset Protocol.
Very simple.
Daily - even just 5 to 10 minutes
No phone. No input. No talking.
Just sitting… observing.
Weekly - 1 to 2 hours
Go for a walk. No podcast. No calls.
Just you… and your thoughts.
Quarterly - half a day or more
Step away. Journal. Reflect. Think bigger.
And if you can…
once a year…
take a day or two in deeper silence.
Nature, retreat, minimal input.
Because what you’ll often find…
is that the answers you’re looking for…
are already there.
They’re just being drowned out… by noise.
🌿
CLOSING - REFLECTION (19:00 - 20:00)
Losing my voice reminded me of something I think we all forget from time to time.
You don’t always need to do more…
to move forward.
Sometimes…
you need to say less.
Pause
So the question I’ll leave you with is this:
Where in your life…
is silence trying to find you?
And are you willing to listen…
before your body forces you to?
Thank you so much for being here with me today.
If this resonated, I would love for you to share this episode with someone who might need it.
And as always…
choose to live well.
Much love,
Claudia
