Claudia von Boeselager (00:00)
Hello, my sweet friends and welcome back to the Longevity and Lifestyle podcast. I am Claudia von Boeselager and as always here to bring you the most powerful science fact insights to help you live not just longer, but better. Today's episode, I've been to share this with you. I've been thinking about and working on this topic deeply, something that has completely shifted how I see health, performance, and even the spaces we live in.
So let me start with a simple question. What if the place you spend the most time in, your home, is either quietly accelerating your aging or actively supporting your longevity? Because here's something that most people don't fully appreciate. You see, we spend over 90 % of our indoors. And yet when we think about optimizing our health, we think about nutrition and exercise and supplements, maybe sleep.
But rarely stop and ask, what is my environment doing to me every single day? Because whether we realize it or not, our environment is constantly interacting with our biology. It's not neutral. It's either helping us or it's working against us.
today I want to open your eyes to this because once you see it, it changes everything. So let's zoom out for a moment. We are living in a time where there has never been more access to health optimization. People are investing in it, advanced diagnostics, personalized supplements, peptides, stem cells, wearables tracking, everything from sleep to glucose to HRV. And yet...
So many people still feel tired. They struggle with sleep, with focus, with energy, with resilience. And I've seen this over and over again, even with high performers, executives, founders to athletes, people who are doing everything right.
So naturally the question becomes, well, what are we missing? And for me, this was a big realization. We spend all this time and money optimizing the body, but we are ignoring the environment that the body actually lives in. And that environment is not passive. It's a continuous stream of biological signals. And I think this is where it becomes really important to pause because this is not about fear. This is not about perfection.
It's about awareness because once you understand what's happening, you can start to make better, more intelligent choices.
So let me walk you through this in a simple way. There are five key elemental factors that influence your biology every single day. Number one is the air you breathe indoors. can actually often be more polluted than the air outside. We're talking about fine particles, chemicals from materials, even things like mold, which can be hiding in your HVAC or air conditioning system between the walls.
in places that you wouldn't even think about. And these don't just affect your lungs, they impact inflammation, brain function, energy levels. So even something as simple as the air quality in your bedroom can influence how you feel the next day. Number two is water. So water is something we interact with constantly, obviously for drinking, but not just for drinking, it's also showering, where you're not only getting it
ingested through your skin, but you're inhaling it as well in a hot shower. Also bathing, swimming, and depending on where you live, the water can contain things like heavy metals, chlorine byproducts and other contaminants. Over time, that creates a subtle but constant load, a toxic load on the body. Number three is light. So this is another one of my favorite topics because light is not just something we see.
It's something that programs our body. It regulates our circadian rhythm, our sleep, our hormones, our metabolism. And yet most modern environments are completely out of sync with what our biology actually needs. Number four are materials. So the materials around us are furniture, flooring, paints. Many of them release chemicals slowly over time. So even when you're resting, your body is working.
processing, detoxifying, and with materials also to highlight chemical products that you use for cleaning at home. Just be very, very wary of these and ideally select ones that are non-toxic and aerate regularly Number five is your nervous system load. Noise, stimulation, constant inputs, even things we don't consciously notice. They keep the body slightly activated, slightly on.
And that makes it much harder to fully recover. So here's something I'll always like to remind people. Your body doesn't separate these things. It doesn't say, this is stress, this is light, this is a toxin. It simply receives input and response. And if those inputs are not aligned, over time, the system becomes dysregulated. So let's look at the biology.
I want to dive a little bit deeper into the science because this is where it becomes really fascinating in my view. As you may know, I'm a little bit of a nerd. So I love these things. At the core of your health is energy
And that energy is managed by your mitochondria or the energy packs of your cells. I like to think of it as an internal economy. Your body has to decide where do I allocate my energy today toward repair, toward performance, toward detoxification, toward managing stress. And when your environment is clean and supportive, you have more energy available for the things that you actually like.
Clarity, strength, longevity, performance, having fun, doing the things you love. Right? We all want more of that in our lives. But when your environment is constantly adding stress, that energy gets redirected towards survival. And this is where I think this line becomes really important. You cannot build a high performance life inside a low performance environment.
Or more simply, you cannot optimize your biology in a survival state. And again, this is not about perfection. It's about understanding the direction of your environment and what it's pushing you in. Let me give you a very practical example because I love making this real. A lot of people think they've made a healthier choice by switching, for example, from a toxic chlorine pool to a saltwater pool. And it's understandable. It feels softer, more natural.
But here's what most people don't realize. Saltwater pools are still chlorine pools. They simply produce chlorine in a different way. Through a process that's called electrolysis, salt is converted into chlorine to disinfect the water. So while it might feel gentler, you're still being exposed to toxic chlorine absorbed through your skin. And for some people, that can impact not only their skin, but their respiratory system and their overall chemical load.
Now compare that to newer systems like oxygen and ozone based pools, which reduce chemical exposure significantly. And again, It's about understanding what are the inputs I'm exposing myself to consistently. And so this is something that we are so passionate with my other company, LUMARA Collective.
This really where everything clicked because I realized
If we truly want to help people live longer, healthier, more vibrant lives, we can't just focus on the person. We have to focus on the environment around them. And that's exactly why I'm so passionate about this work. And together with my partners at LUMARA Collective, Alexandra and Ashley,
We focus on helping people upgrade their environments in a meaningful way. We work with private homes, real estate developers, architects, hotels to transform spaces from something that quietly drains your biology into something that actively supports it.
And what I love about this work is that it's not just about one thing, it's about the whole system. We look at air quality, water systems, circadian lighting, materials, but also your gym environment, your recovery spaces, your sleep setup, even your outdoor areas. And yes, even things like replacing traditional or chlorine pools or your mattresses, for example.
that are typically very toxic with organic ones that support your health. And so we love these systems that are much more aligned with your human biology. Because when you understand how everything connects, you realize every detail matters, But also every improvement compounds.
And what's really fascinating is that this isn't just a health conversation anymore. It's actually becoming a real estate conversation, an investment conversation. We're seeing that environments designed for health and performance are becoming more desirable, more valuable, more future proof.
Because the definition of luxury is also changing. It's no longer just about aesthetics. It's about how a space makes you actually feel, how you sleep, how you recover, how you perform. I truly believe recovery capacity is becoming the ultimate status symbol.
So if there's one idea I want to leave you with today, it's this. Your environment is shaping your biology every single day, gently, quietly, consistently. And once you become aware of that, you can start to shift it step by step in a way that feels aligned for you. And if this is something that resonates, and if you're curious about how to upgrade your own environment, whether it's your home, a project, or something larger,
