How to get into ketosis faster and skip the painful transition?

For those that have tried to fast for a few days or starting on the keto diet will recall how physically challenging it feels when leaving a carb- and glucose-rich diet.
So here is a little hack, dear friends, on what you can do:
First off - why should you do this?
Getting into ketosis as quickly as possible helps to skip muscle wasting.
And on top of that, the more often you enter ketosis, the faster the transition, so its worth practicing this regularly.
By getting into ketosis quickly, it also maximizes your time in ketosis to get the weight loss and other health benefits faster.
So how, you ask, can this be done?
Here is one great protocol recommended by best-selling author and human guinea pig Tim Ferriss:

  • Plan ahead – organize a morning to start the Keto Challenge with how you can be productive for 3-4 hours on you phone – either arrange phone calls, podcasts or your favorite music playlist (see below for this to make sense).
  • Eat a low-/no carb dinner early the night before you start the Keto Challenge (so you finish around 6pm).
  • The day you start your Keto Challenge, sleep as late as possible to let sleep do some of the work for you.
  • Upon waking, consume some caffeine with exogenous ketones (e.g. coconut oil) or MCT oil and 2 more times during the day in approx. 3 to 4 hour intervals to help with any carb withdrawl “suffering” you may otherwise experience. We like a caprylic acid (C8) like Bulletproof’s Upgraded Octane Oil (INSERT AMAZON LINK) with a tablespoon of grass-fed butter in our coffee or black or green tea. Once in deep ketosis and using body fat you can omit this.
  • Within 30 minutes of waking, head out for a long brisk WALK! Bring some water with a bit of fresh lemon (add some Himalayan salt to help prevent headaches/cramping) and sip while brisk walking making your planed phone calls (see above) or listening to your podcasts. Brisk walking for 3-4 hours and constant hydration are key here – not intense exercise.

Knowing how deep you are in ketosis can help you reach the feeling of mental clarity as well as reap the health and longevity benefits. A generally accepted “threshold” for ketosis is a blood level of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) above 0.5 millimolar (mmol). The most reliable way to measure this is using the Precision Xtra by Abbott (INSERT AMAZON LINK) as it can measure both glucose and blood levels of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB). A less expensive alternative are Ketone Urine Test Strips (INSERT AMAZON LINK). From 0.5 mmol you are lightly in ketosis, with most people feeling increased mental clarity at 1mmol or above. Dr Dominic “Dom” D’Agostino, PhD, a known Keto Expert and Scientist, likes to be in mild to moderate ketosis for health and longevity at 1 to 3 mmol (levels which help protect DNA from damage as well as other benefits).
